Galley Kitchen: Will It Work in Your Home?

Galley kitchens don’t necessarily work in all home styles. But when they do work, they provide several unique advantages. In this blog, Wortham Bros, Inc. shares the reasons why you should consider galley kitchens among your remodeling and roof repair options.

What is a Galley Kitchen?

A galley kitchen consists of two parallel runs of equipment, with a single corridor spanning its entire length. Its name was derived from ship kitchens, which are built to follow the ship’s layout. Its elongated design won’t fit components that would fit in a typical kitchen, such as a kitchen island. Galley kitchens are best for homes with limited space that still require a full kitchen.

Advantages of a Galley Kitchen

One of the main advantages of a galley kitchen is its space efficiency. You can plan the equipment and plumbing so one side covers two points of your work triangle, which typically consists of the refrigerator, cooktop, and sink. While it certainly costs more than what roof repair cost would be, a galley kitchen costs less than what a full-size kitchen would.

Things to Consider When Getting a Galley Kitchen

Before you focus your plans on a galley kitchen, there are a few things you should consider:

  1. Working Space — Galley kitchens are not ideal for kitchens that serve a large household. Given the space constraints, they may only fit up to two cooks at a time. If your kitchen remodeling plans allow expansion, consider having a wider corridor.

  2. Natural Lighting — Natural lighting may be a challenge if the galley kitchen is to be located in a spot with few or no windows. While you can compensate with ambient and focus lighting, consider incorporating new windows into the kitchen design.

  3. Overhead Space — Traditional overhead kitchen cabinets may make the galley kitchen look more cramped. Consider shallow cabinetry, or ditch the cabinet doors altogether and adopt open cabinet designs.
