Roof Rafters vs. Trusses: What’s the Difference?

Without sufficient support, your roof wouldn’t be able to do its job of protecting your home from the elements. There are two types of roof support: rafters and trusses. Which is better?

Wortham Bros, your trusted roofers, explains their respective pros and cons below:

The Main Difference Between the Two

A crucial distinction between rafters and trusses is the way they’re manufactured. The former is built manually through a method called stick framing while the latter is manufactured in factories and delivered to your home ready for installation.

Roof Rafters: The Pros

  • Larger attic space – We would recommend choosing roof rafters if you’re planning to convert your attic into a living space. That’s because local building codes have minimum space requirements for attic conversions.
  • Attic insulation – Thanks to the larger attic space, it’s easier to install insulation in roofs and attics with rafters.

Roof Rafters: The Cons

  • Longer project duration and higher labor costs – Since rafters have to be built manually, construction takes more time. And the longer it takes to finish construction, the higher your labor costs.

Roof Trusses: The Pros

  • Faster construction – Since roof trusses are factory-made, the timeline for your new roof will be shorter and faster.
  • Lower overall project costs – According to a study conducted by the National Association of Home Builders, the material and labor costs of houses built using trusses were 16% lower than houses built using traditional rafters.

Roof Trusses: The Cons

  • Smaller attic space – Attics with trusses are smaller than those built using rafters.

Having trouble deciding between the two? Don’t hesitate to consult a trusted local roofer.
