Do You Have a Roof Leak?

The most obvious sign of a roof leak is water visibly flowing down from your ceiling. However, you don’t have to wait until you’re catching rainwater with a bucket indoors to start worrying about a leak and call roofers. Many times, leaks leave signs you can watch out for.

These include:

  • Mold – Mold thrives on moisture so finding some inside your home can be indicative of a leak. It’s source needs to be addressed right away because not only does it promote premature deterioration in building materials but it’s also bad for your health, especially if someone in your family already has respiratory issues like asthma or allergies.
  • Ceiling Stains – Ceiling stains develop as mold and algae grow, no thanks to the damp environment created by a leak. They worsen over time and may appear to have a darker ring surrounding a leak’s main source. Unfortunately, stain size does not always accurate represent the severity of a leak. Sometimes, it’s possible for a ceiling stain to be small because a bigger problem is festering elsewhere. At the earliest sign of a ceiling stain, don’t hesitate to call a roofer on The Good Contractors List to check it out.
  • Flashing Damage – Flashing are in place to protect joints in your roof against moisture intrusion. As such, if they are damaged, they are no longer protecting roof joints as they should, making it highly likely for moisture intrusion to have occurred.
  • Missing Roofing Material – If you see bald spots on your roof or have asphalt shingles on the ground, this means your roof has weakened areas, making them vulnerable to leaks. It’s easy to overlook missing roofing material so it’s prudent to schedule routine inspections.
