What You Need to Get From a Roofer’s Reference List

Whether you need to have a new roof constructed or repair an existing one, choosing the right roofer for the job is imperative. One of the best possible ways to know that the contractor you are considering is the right fit for your needs is if they come recommended. Find out if they can provide references of past projects.

Information from Previous Customers

Getting a list of references from a prospective roofing contractor allows you to learn if they did a great job and were easy to work with. Ask them for at least three from the past five years. More often than not, they’re likely to provide their favorite. Give them a call and ask informative questions such as the following:

  • Were you satisfied with the contractor’s work?

  • Were they professional and courteous throughout the project?

  • How much did your roof repair or replacement run over budget?

  • Would you still recommend them for your next roofing project?

Expect the list to only contain their most satisfied clients. It is certainly helpful, but it would be great if you dig deeper to learn more about your prospective roofing contractor.

Doing a More Advanced Search

Consider being specific when asking for references. Ask your potential contractor for the list of their previous customers from their last three to five projects. It may or may not include names from the original reference list. Get in touch with the ones who aren’t in the initial list and ask the same set of questions.

If you noticed anything different between the response you’ve received from the second reference list and the original one, it is likely that the contractor’s recent performance isn’t as satisfactory or smooth-sailing as you’d expect. While an isolated issue isn’t much of a concern, you’ll want to be cautious about a prospect who’s experienced a trend of dissatisfied clients.

Obtaining supplier or manufacturer references is also a great way to learn more about the contractor. Ask questions that will provide fiscal clues to how they perform business. Be sure to listen and take cues on how they feel about the contractor.
