DFW Area Re-Roofing & Roof Repair ExpertsComposition shingles are some of the most popular roofing options for residential properties. Made from a combination of asphalt and mineral fillers with a fiberglass-reinforcing mat at the center, these shingles are available in many different styles and colors. This ensures that they will fit nearly any type of home style and personal preference.
The filler is connected to the fiberglass mat, the asphalt sits on top of it, and the top surface is made of ceramic granules. All these items work together to ensure that water cannot penetrate your home.

Types of Asphalt/Composition Shingles
There are three main types of composition roofing systems.
- Architectural/Premium: These are the premium version of the following two shingle types. Lasting for 50 years or more, premium shingles are larger and heavier, which means that they withstand weather conditions better. Manufacturers have designed different styles to emulate natural products like wood shingles, slate and tile, while others have unique styles of their own.
- Laminated/Dimensional: Laminated shingles are the superior choice to 3-Tab shingles in that they are stronger and last longer (typically between 30 and 50 years). These value-added shingles have a number of different looks and color blends, giving the roof a “layered” look.
- 3-Tab: 3-Tab shingles are the least expensive option. They feature a single-layer shingle tab size and shape with a very flat appearance. They typically last between 20 and 25 years.
